Chapter Twenty-One

Galen stepped out of Mylo Steelquill’s portal and into the most bizarre training grounds he had ever seen. That they were training grounds was obvious. Circles were inscribed in the ground, narrow plants provided surfaces to balance on, rope nets stretched taut across the space, and a dozen other obstacles were incorporated. What was less obvious was how the various component pieces could exist.

The rope net was merely one example. Tight and about a foot off the ground, he could see how it could be used to either shimmy under or to step in the squares to work on his footwork. What he could not see was what it was connected to. It simply floated there as if stakes were pounded into the ground but were outside of the spectrum of light that he could see. And that was one of the more straightforward pieces of equipment.

Another “normal” piece was the balance beam. It was mounted on the earth on both ends but the board that connected each mound of earth twisted.

It was there that Mylo stopped and looked around. “If I had my way, we would do this Musashi style.”

“Musashi?” he asked.

The pixie drew his sword—it was about four inches long—and slashed at the air. “Strike one!”

“You’re counting strikes?”

“From this moment on, everything counts,” Mylo said and strolled out onto the balance beam. When the piece of wood twisted, he made no attempt to step to the other side. Instead, he continued to cling to the surface as he went upside down and right up again. In effect, he spiraled around the board as he walked and somehow clung to its surface.

“What is the Musashi—”

“If we had the time, you would spend a year fetching water to build strength.”

“A year? I’m a dragon. I already have superhuman strength.”

His tutor slashed at the air again. “Strike two! After that year, you would spend another walking the border of a tatami mat to learn discipline. But we do not have time for all that. Not when you have made a date with death.”

“So, what will we do?”

“We will start with the basics. Draw your blade.”

Galen complied.

“Do you know how it works?” Mylo asked.

“My sword?” He didn’t know that swords could “work.”

“The pointy end goes in the other guy.” Mylo smirked at his quote. “It sounds simple and it is unless your opponent has the same goal. Join me on this balance beam.”

The young dragon—not one to allow his strength to be cast in doubt—leapt upward with a push of his dragon strength. He rocketed twenty feet above the earth before he plunged toward the balance beam. His jump had been aimed perfectly and he prepared to land with skill and precision.

Seconds before he touched down, the board pushed him away. Instead of his feet touching, he pounded into it with his chest, slipped off, and sprawled in the mud beneath it.

“You can no longer choose when you jump. When I say jump, you say how high.”

“I thought that was a song, not a movie with a sword—”

“Silence!” Mylo shouted.
